Tips on Relocating
14 DAYS BEFORE YOU MOVE
- Empty out your cupboards, closets etc.
- Create an inventory of the things you plan to take along.
- Decide which plants you want to take with you. Give the others as gifts to your neighbors.
- Have a garage sale or donate unwanted items to charity.
- Notify your post office, publications, and correspondents of change of address and the date that you are moving.
- Plan to transfer your savings and checking accounts.
- Call your insurance carrier to ensure that your new residence is covered.
- Contact telephone, electric, gas and water companies to confirm the date you want to discontinue service at your old residence as well as the service start date at your new abode.
- Check new driver's license and auto registration requirements.
- Transfer medical records and get copies of prescriptions.
- Register your children for school and it is probably a good idea to get a copy of their school records before you leave.
- If you own a pet ask your vet for advice on traveling with/shipping your animal.
- Buy shipping cartons/boxes and begin packing...it always takes longer than you think.
7 DAYS...AND COUNTING

- Keep a detailed record and receipts of your moving expenses for income-tax purposes.
- Keep your telephone connected through your moving day.
1 DAY BEFORE

THE BIG DAY! (MOVING-OUT)

- NEVER TRANSPORT flammables or combustibles.
- DON'T TRANSPORT any valuables with the moving company.
THE NEXT BIG DAY! (MOVING-IN)
- Contact utility companies to verify start dates. (You should have already made arrangements for utilities to be turned on - If not you might want to buy some candles).
